DIY Reusable Cleaning Wipes

“I’m sharing how to prevent the flu this cold and flu season featuring Zep and using reusable cleaning wipes as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars #ZepSocialstars”

I grew up with a Mother that was clean…..not just clean but CLEAN.  That woman scrubbed everything in sight and there was always a whiff of bleach present especially during cold and flu season.  Every counter top and washable surface in the house underwent a water/bleach wipe down almost daily and when we went anywhere and returned home (I’m talking even if we went to the mailbox) we had to wash our hands thoroughly with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds (the mailman might be sick).   I swear when I was a teenager and was given the privilege of cleaning with my Mother’s bleach concoction I thought I may have lost my fingerprints (that stuff was strong) but in my home there’s very little bleach use and I instead keep my family healthy and combat germs with Zep Commercial Quick Clean Disinfectant.   It’s my preferred cleaning product because it meets The CDC recommendation for EPA registered, hospital grade disinfectants, with a label claim for any of several non-enveloped viruses (e.g. norovirus, polio virus, rhinovirus).

While I may not share my Mother’s affinity for bleach I do have a great tip to share with you today that was inspired by her.  Mom always recycled worn sheets into what she called “dust rags”.

These rags had their own closet (there were a LOT of them) and they were used for not just dusting but scrubbing and wiping.  I have followed in my Mom’s footsteps and anytime we have sheets that are no longer used I cut it up into rags but for the case of sounding fancy I’ll say wipes.  😉

I prefer old flannel sheets for this purpose.  These wipes are so much better than paper towels because you can really get into the nitty gritty of cleaning with them and not worry about them ripping on you and they are eco-friendly.  Use and reuse them.  I wash them after each use in hot water and laundry detergent and then dry as usual.  I have had some rags for years and years.  I use, wash, fold and repeat.  These are great to use on the bottom of your floor sweeper as well ~ no more buying refills pads so they’ll save you money.

So now let’s focus on getting through the rest of cold and flu season healthy ~ here are some of my favorite tips.

  • Use Zep Commercial Quick Clean Disinfectant to spray doorknobs and handles and then wipe down with a rag (germs are EVERYWHERE you know!) and to clean counter tops, sink bowls and faucet handles.
  • Cover your mouth when you sneeze (sneeze into the crook of your arm….NOT your hands) and avoid sick people.  If they look sick quickly walk in the opposite direction 😉
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or face until you’ve washed your hands (remember….the mailman may be sick!).

Below is a wonderful infographic that has so much useful info to survive the Cold and Flu Season.  I love the tip about staying at least 6 feet away from a sick co-worker ~ if there’s someone at work you want to avoid maybe print this out and keep it framed in your cubicle.  After you’ve read it feel free to download and/or share it.  If you’re not sure how to do that just let me know and I’ll lend a hand (after I’ve washed it thoroughly).  😉

Stay healthy ~
