Enamelware Decorating Ideas

Enamelware bowls with lids and an enamelware refrigerator drawer - enamelware decorating ideas

Over the years I've picked up a few enamelware items from the thrift store. I didn't even realize I had a collection, albeit a small one, until recently when I was doing a purge. The enamelware remained safe and avoided being a victim of the purge but once I gathered the few pieces I have, I thought they deserved better than being tucked away in a cabinet so I put them together in a mini display and wanted to share some enamelware decorating ideas and inspiration with you.

Everything I bought totaled maybe $5.00 but my favorite piece is a total freebie.

The tall one standing up is a vintage enamelware refrigerator drawer. I actually have another one in my craft room that's holding greeting cards. The drawers were from my Grandma's refrigerator (or some other relative) and my sister had them in her garage for years but she knows me well and sent them over to my house about a year ago....I was thrilled to get them!

These drawers are beast...as in, HEAVY. Oh, how I wish refrigerators were still made with enamelware drawers.  The refrigerator I have now has plastic drawers...really...plastic???? And, each and every drawer has cracked or broken in some way. Sort of ridiculous but I guess that's the difference between now and the 1950's!

Grouping for Impact

One thing I've learned over the years with all of my decorating changes and updates is that it's best to group similar pieces OR have just one of something so that it stands out....I am a groupie 😉 and that's the way I like to display my items...especially vintage ones.

I really like the white with black enamelware but the red one makes me swoon! I imagine it as part of a red checked picnic display...maybe I'll work on hunting and gathering more of the white with red.  What do you think?

Everything in the display is either vintage...or cheap.

The scale...vintage....

The shutter....vintage.....

The drawers and enamelware....vintage...

The rest...just plain cheap.

Oh, and after I took these photos, I remembered another one of my favorite enamelware pieces. It's an oblong container with a lid (like this one) ...small and so cute. I'm not sure where it is right now but, since I know it's "missing in action" I now must find it. *sigh*

  6. I love your enamelware collection Mary Beth, and the pretty way you displayed it. I've had a few pieces but didn't have room to store them so I sent them back out into the world so someone else could enjoy them. They definitely should be displayed. 🙂

Thank you, Krisi, and I totally understand about sending things back out into the world. I have been narrowing down a lot of my collections lately and while I miss some of my "stuff" I feel so much lighter - sounds sort of strange but too much and clutter make me feel less creative.

  7. What a pretty collection Mary Beth and I love the vignette you created! It all looks so fresh and pretty. Happy summer to you friend! xoxo

Thank you so much, Meegan, and yes to the enamelware drawers. I think I may start collecting them but I honestly don't recall having ever seen any. We'll have to peel our eyes for them. 🙂
