Step 1: The right products

How to clean oven? It all starts with the right products. All-purpose cleaner, scouring pads and some old cloths will suffice, but cleaning your oven can be hard work, especially when it’s been a while. There are special cleaners for your oven. They cost a bit more than your standard all-purpose cleaner, but they get the job done quick and easy. Might be a good idea when your oven is filled with old grease.

Step 2: The glass

You can clean the oven in any order of steps you want, but we start with the glass. The glass of the oven can get very dirty with grease. You need warm water to get the grease of. In bad cases, you can pour some boiling water over the glass, but make sure you keep it safe. After that, take a scouring pad and some green soap to scrub the window. If the grease doesn’t come off right away, you could try to scrub some green soap over the window, put a pan with hot water in the oven and close the door for half an hour. After that, the grease might come off more easily. To make sure you have no ugly stripes on your beautiful glass door: finish it off with microfiber cloth.

Step 3: The door

The door of the oven needs some cleaning as well. Again, you can use all-purpose cleaner or green soap and a scouring pad, but when the grease just doesn’t want to come off, you can try to make a paste of a little bit of water and dishwashing liquid. Put this paste on your oven door and let it stay there for a couple of hours, after that, scrub it off. If you have some burnt in places in your oven door, use lemon juice to remove them.

Step 4: The racks

The racks may be the worst to clean, but at least you can take them out of the oven, so you have more space to clean them. If you are lucky, your oven has a pyrolyse program. This is an easy way to remove the grease from your racks. You can just leave them in the oven and put the program on, you don’t have to do anything else except for removing some loose grease after the program has run. Unfortunately, not all ovens have this program. If you don’t: mix hot water with baking soda, vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Use a scouring pad to put this on the racks of your oven. You might need brute force to remove all the grease, but this mix of ingredients can be very efficient.

Step 5: The walls and floors

The walls and the floors are also not the nicest things to clean, because some parts can be hard to reach, but just like with the doors a paste of dishwashing liquid and water can do the trick. Leave it for a couple of hours and use a scouring pad to remove the grease.

Preventing your oven from getting dirty

Cleaning your oven is the easiest when your oven is not that dirty. That’s why we include some tips to prevent your oven from getting dirty. One easy way to prevent your oven from getting dirty is using an oven dish, instead of putting the food you want to grill right on top of the racks. You might already use a dish for your lasagne or traybakes that are currently in trend, but use it for your snacks as well. It prevents grease from setting in your oven and you can put the oven dish in the dishwasher. When you don’t need to grill the food, but just want to cook it in the oven, place some tinfoil over the oven dish, it prevents the grease in the food from spreading through your oven. And finally: have some discipline and clean the oven right away. When you do it every time after you have used your oven, it will not even take that long because your oven is not that dirty. Implement it in your daily chores, just like you have to do the dishes after cooking. Cleaning your oven might not be the most fun thing in the world, but with a bit of discipline, your oven can look brand new. Make sure you keep your oven clean in the future, so you don’t have the scrub of a layer of ten year old grease again!
