How to Clean a Mattress with Baking Soda and Peroxide (It Really Works)

Your mattress works hard every single night. But when is the last time you actually cleaned it?

I get it. It feels like a big job. But I promise you, cleaning your mattress with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is easier than you think, it costs almost nothing, and the results are genuinely satisfying.

I do a full mattress clean twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, right when I swap out my bedding. I also spot clean whenever something spills or a stain shows up. This method handles both.

Here is everything you need to know.

What You Need to Clean Your Mattress

You probably already have most of this on hand:

  • Baking soda (a full box for a queen or king)
  • Hydrogen peroxide (standard 3% from the drugstore)
  • Dish soap
  • A spray bottle
  • Clean towels or paper towels
  • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • Essential oil, optional, for scent

That is it. No specialty mattress cleaner needed.

How to Deep Clean a Mattress with Baking Soda

Use this method for your regular seasonal cleaning or any time your mattress just needs a refresh.

Step 1: Strip and Wash Your Bedding

Pull off all your sheets, pillowcases, and mattress cover and throw them in the washing machine. This gives your mattress time to air out while the bedding washes.

Step 2: Vacuum the Entire Surface

Use your vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment to go over the full top and sides of the mattress. You are pulling up dust mites, dead skin cells, pet dander, and any loose debris. Do not skip this step. It makes everything that follows more effective.

Step 3: Sprinkle Baking Soda Generously

Shake a generous layer of baking soda over the entire top of the mattress. If you want a light fresh scent, add several drops of essential oil to the baking soda first and stir it around before sprinkling. Lavender is great for the bedroom.

Let it sit for at least one hour. I usually let it go for two to three hours if I can. The longer it sits, the more odors it pulls out.

Step 4: Vacuum Again

Vacuum up all the baking soda using the same upholstery attachment. Go slowly and make sure you get it all, especially along the seams.

At this point your mattress should smell noticeably fresher. If you have no stains to deal with, you are done. Put your clean bedding back on and enjoy.

Make Your Own Mattress Freshening Powder

Want to take the baking soda step up a notch? I have been making this DIY mattress powder for years and it is one of my favorite little homemaking habits.

Fill a clean shaker bottle about three quarters of the way full with baking soda. Add 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil directly into the baking soda, put the lid on, and shake well to combine. Lavender is my go-to for the bedroom, but eucalyptus works beautifully too.

(Pro-tip: Buy your favorite essential oils in bulk so you always have them on hand for the next use).

Sprinkle it over your mattress just like you would plain baking soda, let it sit for one to two hours, then vacuum it up. The essential oil gives your bedroom a subtle, clean scent that lasts.

For the shaker bottle: a clean glass jar with a punctured lid works perfectly. I use an old Frappuccino bottle with holes poked in the lid.

How to Clean Mattress Stains with Baking Soda and Peroxide

This is the heavy hitter combo. It works on sweat stains, yellow stains, urine stains, and most other tough stains that build up over time.

The Cleaning Solution

Mix together in a spray bottle:

  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • A few drops of dish soap

Shake it gently to combine. Use it right away since this mixture works best fresh.

How to Apply

  1. Lightly spray the stained area. Do not soak it.
  2. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Blot with a clean cloth. Do not rub or you will spread the stain.
  4. Let the mattress air dry completely before replacing bedding.

For stubborn stains, you can apply a second round. The hydrogen peroxide solution works by breaking down the proteins in the stain, which is why it is so effective on sweat stains, urine stains, and other bodily fluid stains.

Important: Always test in a hidden spot first, and skip this method if you have a memory foam mattress with a no-moisture care instruction. Check your manufacturer's instructions if you are unsure.

How to Clean a Smelly Mattress

If your mattress has a strong smell, whether that is sweat smell, a musty odor, or just that stale sleep smell, baking soda is your best friend.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that absorbs and neutralizes odors rather than just covering them up. For a really smelly mattress, do this:

  • Vacuum the mattress first to remove any surface debris.
  • Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the entire surface.
  • Let it sit for at least four hours. Overnight is even better.
  • Vacuum it all up thoroughly.

If you can, open the windows and let fresh air circulate while the baking soda sits. Direct airflow makes a real difference. For odors from urine or pet stains, follow the hydrogen peroxide cleaning method first, then apply the baking soda treatment on top once the area is dry.

How to Clean a Wet Mattress

Act fast. The longer moisture sits in a mattress, the more likely you are to end up with mold growth or a permanent smell.

  • Blot up as much liquid as possible with dry towels. Press firmly but do not rub.
  • Sprinkle baking soda over the wet area. It will absorb the remaining moisture and start neutralizing any odor.
  • Let it sit until completely dry, then vacuum it up.
  • If there is a stain left behind, treat it with the hydrogen peroxide solution above.
  • Allow the mattress to air dry fully before putting bedding back on. Use a fan to speed this up if needed.

Never put sheets on a mattress that is still damp. Trapped moisture leads to mold and that is a much bigger problem.

Tips to Keep Your Mattress Clean Longer

  • Use a waterproof mattress protector. This single habit will save you so much cleaning effort.
  • Vacuum your mattress every time you change your sheets.
  • Do a full baking soda treatment twice a year.
  • Wash your bedding weekly to cut down on sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells building up.
  • Flip or rotate your mattress every few months if your mattress type allows it.
  • If you use a memory foam mattress topper, following a regular cleaning routine makes your bed feel even more restorative.

Want to Go Even Deeper?

Baking soda and a good vacuum do a lot of the work, but if you really want to see what is hiding in your mattress, I reviewed a dedicated mattress vacuum cleaner that uses UV-C light and high-frequency tapping to pull out what a regular vacuum can not reach. The results honestly surprised me. See what came out of my mattress here.

Products That Make This Easier

These are the things I keep on hand for mattress cleaning:

A good mattress protector is worth every penny: Mattress Protector

I keep a dedicated spray bottle just for this: Spray Bottle Set

The upholstery attachment on this vacuum is excellent: Vacuum with Upholstery Attachment

The Bottom Line

A clean mattress is not just about appearances. It actually helps you sleep better, reduces allergens from dust mites and pet dander, and extends the life of your mattress. And with nothing but baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and a little elbow grease, you can do a full deep clean in an afternoon.

This is one of those homemaking habits that feels really good once you are in a routine with it. Give it a try the next time you wash your sheets.

How to Clean a Mattress with Baking Soda and Peroxide

Does baking soda really clean a mattress?

Yes. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and mild abrasive that absorbs odors and helps lift surface grime. It will not deep clean stains on its own, but for freshening and deodorizing a mattress it is one of the most effective and affordable options available. For stains, pair it with hydrogen peroxide for better results.

How long should I leave baking soda on my mattress?

For routine freshening, leave baking soda on your mattress for at least one hour. For a deeply smelly mattress, aim for four hours or even overnight. The longer it sits, the more odors it can absorb before you vacuum it up.

Is it safe to use hydrogen peroxide on a mattress?

Standard 3% hydrogen peroxide, which is what you find at the drugstore, is safe to use on most mattresses when applied lightly. It should not be soaked in. Always test a small hidden area first, and check your mattress care instructions. Memory foam mattresses with strict no-moisture guidelines should be cleaned with extra caution.

Can I use this cleaning method on a memory foam mattress?

You can use baking soda on a memory foam mattress for deodorizing since it is dry. For the hydrogen peroxide spray, use it very sparingly and allow it to dry completely before replacing bedding. Memory foam can retain moisture, which can lead to mold. When in doubt, check your manufacturer's care instructions.

What is the best way to get urine stains out of a mattress?

For urine stains, the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda combination works very well. Mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with three tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the stained area, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then blot with a clean cloth and allow to air dry. For the urine smell, follow up with a generous layer of baking soda once the area is dry.

How often should I clean my mattress?

A full deep clean with baking soda twice a year is a good routine, typically in the spring and fall when you are already swapping out bedding. You should also spot clean any stains as soon as they happen since fresh stains are much easier to remove than set-in ones. Vacuuming your mattress every time you change your sheets is a quick habit that makes a big difference over time.

What causes yellow stains on a mattress?

Yellow stains on a mattress are usually caused by sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells that build up over time. They can also come from urine. These protein-based stains respond well to hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down the proteins and helps lift the discoloration.

How do I clean a wet mattress quickly?

Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately using dry towels. Press firmly to absorb moisture without spreading it. Then cover the area with baking soda to draw out remaining moisture, let it sit until dry, and vacuum it up. If a stain remains, treat it with the hydrogen peroxide solution. Never put bedding back on a mattress that is still damp.

How do I keep my mattress from getting stained again?

The most effective thing you can do is use a waterproof mattress protector. It creates a barrier between your mattress and anything that might spill or soak through. Wash your bedding weekly to reduce buildup of sweat and body oils, and do a quick vacuum every time you change your sheets.
