10 Ways To Get Organized {Now} for Next Christmas

10 Easy Ways to Get Organized Now for Next Christmas via Cupcakes and Crinoline

Christmas is magical… but let’s be honest — once the gifts are opened and the decorations come down, it can also feel overwhelming.

The good news? What you do in the next few days can make next Christmas dramatically easier. You don’t need a full overhaul or hours of work. Even a few small steps now will save you time, money, and stress later.

If you’re reading this on Christmas Day or the day after, this post is for you.

Start Here: 10 Minutes for Future You 🎄

Before you put everything away, do just this:

  • Grab a trash bag and a donation bag
  • Start a note on your phone called “Next Christmas”
  • Jot down:
    • Gifts that were a hit (and flops)
    • Decorations you loved (or didn’t use)
    • Anything you ran out of this year
  • Snap a few quick photos of:

That’s it. Those notes alone will save you hours next year.

1. Take Inventory of What You Have

As you take decorations down, make a quick mental (or written) note of what you actually used — and what stayed in storage.

If something hasn’t been used in a few years or no longer fits your style, consider donating it before it gets packed away again.

2. Declutter Before You Store

This is the best time to let things go.

Toss or donate:

  • Broken or half-working lights
  • Ornaments you don’t love anymore
  • Extra wrapping paper you didn’t touch
  • Décor that never made it out of the bin

Storing less = decorating faster next year.

3. Organize Decorations by Room (Not Just by Type)

Instead of “Christmas Décor,” think:

  • Living Room
  • Tree Decorations
  • Kitchen & Dining
  • Outdoor Décor

Three easy organization levels:

  • Level 1: Label bins with room + category
  • Level 2: Tape a simple inventory list inside the lid
  • Level 3: Use QR labels linked to a notes app with photos and lists

This makes decorating next year almost effortless.

4. Check and Store Christmas Lights the Smart Way

Before storing lights:

  • Plug them in and replace burned-out bulbs
  • Toss strings that don’t work
  • Label each set by location (tree, porch, garland, etc.)

Wrap each strand individually (on cardboard, reels, or in gallon bags) so they’re tangle-free next year.

5. Create a Wrapping Station That Stores in One Bin

Instead of scattered supplies, keep:

  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Gift tags
  • Ribbon
  • Extra gift bags

…all in one container that fits with your wrapping paper storage.

Bonus tip: designate one shelf or tote for gifts you buy throughout the year.

6. Start a Holiday Recipe & Pantry List

Right now is the perfect time to note:

  • Recipes everyone loved
  • Recipes that flopped
  • Pantry items you ran out of
  • Dishes you want to try next year

Keep this in a small binder or digital note labeled “Christmas Recipes.”

7. Track Gift Ideas All Year Long

Create a simple list for:

  • Each family member
  • Teachers, neighbors, and host gifts
  • Stocking stuffers

Include:

  • Gift idea
  • Purchased? (yes/no)
  • Where it’s stored
  • Budget

Keeping gifts in one labeled bin or closet saves so much stress in December.

8. Wash & Store Holiday Linens Now

Before packing away:

  • Wash tablecloths, napkins, and runners
  • Treat stains immediately
  • Store clean, folded, and ready to go

Future you will thank you next December.

9. Update Your Christmas Card List

As cards come in:

  • Save updated addresses
  • Remove people you no longer exchange cards with
  • Decide if you want to keep a “favorites” box or digitize and recycle the rest

This alone saves hours next year.

10. Write Down the Memories

Before the season fades, jot down:

  • Funny moments
  • Traditions you loved
  • Things you want to repeat or change

This can be a notebook, journal, or phone note — it doesn’t need to be fancy.

  8. Here is a tip that works for us. Buy Christmas cards for next year on clearance now, but pack them with your Thanksgiving decorations. When you get that box out, you have your cards ready to go, and hopefully, get them written out early. While you are at it, update your address labels, and print out a set to go in the box too. Best hint of all, assign this job to your husband. Works for me.
