Southern Sweet Tea ~ So Easy
In this hot humid weather who doesn't want a cold, refreshing drink either sipped slowly alone in the shade or shared with a group. There is nothing {in my opinion} quite like fresh iced tea. Instead of buying a powdered mix you can make up a batch of Southern Sweet Tea in under 15 minutes ~ some for now and some to chill for later.
Southern Sweet Tea
Ingredients
- 6 cups of water ~ boiled
- 6 tea bags {flavor of your choice}
- 2 cups of sugar ~ more or less to taste
- Garnish ~ mint leaves, lemon slices {optional}
Instructions
- Bring water to a boil.
- Add water above to a gallon sized hot/cold pitcher.
- Add sugar and stir until dissolved.
- Add teabags to water in pitcher and steep for 10 minutes.
- Remove tea bags.
- Add ice to fill pitcher.
- Garnish as desired.
And there you have it ~ Sweet Tea in under 15 minutes.
If you have a go to cold beverage or tea recipe you would like to share I would love to hear about it.
I am actually happy you have given us a recipe for sweet tea! It seems simple, but you have to have the right ratio! This isn't something I drink often, but my husband really enjoys it! Now I can make it for him!
Thanks, Tanya. It is really simple...just the way I like a recipe to be. ; )
My son just got back from living in North Carolina and has been making sweet since he got home. He loves the stuff. Your recipe looks good. I have a Blog Hop, and I would love it if you would link this post. You can find it at

I wanted to give you a suggestion for the diabetics who love sweet tea. Use your recipe but omit the sugar and add a 2 liter bottle of diet cream soda. Because of the water in the tea the carbonation will be very diluted but you will get that sweet tea flavor without the sugar. Enjoy and stay cool!
Great tip, Julia ~ thank you!
I love sweet tea. Lol, I think you use more sugar than I do though. It's perfect for the summer!
That is a lot of sugar ; P Sometimes it needs less but never more. That could possibly be the reason my kids have so much "energy".
Your pitcher of tea looks so good and reminds me that I need to make some for supper. Iced tea is the Summer beverage of choice in our house.

We love it here as well...so refreshing in this heat! : )

Oh I LOVE southern sweet tea! I love it when I go home to Louisiana and I'm always asked "Sweet or non-sweetened"! Thanks for bringing it back!
Every time I try to make it at home, it never tastes as good as when we buy it. I'll have to try again with this!
I have tried several different methods/recipes and this is my favorite. I even have an old Mr. Coffee iced tea maker...hate it from there...blah! : )
I love this - actually I would love some right now :o)
Thanks for linking up this week!

I love sweet tea. My grandmother is from Tennessee and she taught me a similar recipe. This is so good on a hot, summer day. I very nice treat!

Sweet tea is the best refreshment for these record breaking heat waves we are having.
I like to let the hot sun do my brewing for me .
Summer Sun Sweet Tea
My choice of tea is Typhoo Tea.
Equal amounts cups of water to tea bags .
A large clear container ( glass preferably ) .
A spot that the sun heats all day .
Noonday sun works best for me .
Add the bags to the water and set the container in the sun .
Go about your daily business periodically check for desired strength .
When ready . Sweeten to taste, sit back in the shade ,and chill
Thanks for the recipe, Michael. I used to have a sun tear jar but I decluttered my house and gave it away ~ kicking myself now!
You hit it on the head with your receipe, I love tea, the only difference is when I boil the water in the pot, I take off heat and add teabags with little strings hanging on the outside and put a dinner plate over the top of the pot to steep. After steeping I just put in tea pitcher and stick in the fridge. It's funny being from the south I grew up drinking sweet tea, but some people just turn their noses up when you say sweet tea. Guess it's what you are use to. Good luck to all you new tea makers out there. May you always have a dollar in your pocket and a pitcher of tea in the fridge and you'll make it thru the day.
Such sweet sentiments! I'm a Northerner but have always dreamed of some day living in the South...I seem to have a Southern heart 🙂
Have a wonderful week and thank you so very much for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
