15-Minute Ledge Shelf

Have you seen ledge shelves around at Ikea, Home Goods and just about any place that sells home decor?  I have and I ♥love♥ them.  They are so versatile and look wonderful with little picture frames and memorabilia perched on them.  I want them....lots of them....but $$$$ is a bit of a problem so I have just been looking at them and longing for them until now.

Guess what I did?  I made one....yep....I sure as heck did and just between you and I.....it was unbelievably easy and took only 15 minutes.  I made this first one for my husband for his shaving gear {he collects vintage razors} but I am moving on next to make them in varying lengths for the living room...and the next set will be white.  I can hardly wait.  For now though I wanted to share this one with you and show you just how darn easy it is to make.  You could whip up a bunch of these for the upcoming holidays to give as gifts.  Include some frames with pictures of the kids and you can cross Grandma off your list.

What you need:

Wood ~ I bought some hobby cut wood at Home Depot {2 pieces} ~ .5 x 3.5 x 24 Poplar wood

and {1} 1x2x8 piece of wood {this is enough for 4 shelves and is the little piece at the front edge}

Kreg Jig

Self-Tapping Screws {Kreg}

Saw {I used an Olson Coping Saw}

Wood Stain {Minwax Cherry}

Paintbrush to apply stain

Wax

How to:

The hobby cut wood was already the size I needed so no sawing necessary for these pieces.

Cut the 1x2x8 to a length of 24 inches using the saw.

Use the Kreg  Jig to place 6 pocket holes on the bottom center piece of your wood ~ 3 on each side slightly staggered.

Attach side pieces to your bottom pieces using the self-tapping screws.

Sand edges of cut wood piece on each side for smoothness.

Stain ~ allow to dry.

Wax and buff.

Voila!  That's it.  Now wasn't that easy.  I am a total novice and this DIY Ledge Shelf took only 15 minutes of actual hands on time {the stain drying wasn't added in}.

Is your mind working now about where you can put these?  Mine is ~ I'll keep you updated with my new shelves as I make and hang them.
