Tackling Cleaning Projects in Smaller Chunks Helps to Minimize Feeling Overwhelmed

Whether it's spring cleaning that's on your agenda or cleaning in general, the kitchen is usually the first place I like to start.  You get a sense of accomplishment and a clean and organized kitchen is a great starting point.

I recommend "spring cleaning" for your kitchen to be done in the spring and winter, and if time allows, a total of four times a year at the beginning of each season.

Tips for Cleaning Day:

Mark time on your schedule for your spring/seasonal cleaning.

Check your supplies to assure you have everything you'll need in advance.

If your kids are younger, arrange your cleaning around a time when they're in school or napping, or, if needed, arrange to have a sitter come and occupy them.  Since I recommend bite-size cleaning, an hour or two of blocked time is more than enough.

Plan dinner so that you're not frazzled and ordering out at the last minute.

One of my new favorites to serve on days when I know I'll be busy are On-Cor Entrées. For this particular cleaning day, I picked up some of my supplies (see checklist below) and On-Cor Barbecue Sauce & 6 Boneless Rib Shaped Patties at my local Walmart. I chose On-Cor primarily for the flavor and convenience since all I have to do is heat and serve. My family always enjoys when I serve On-Cor, and asks for "that" dinner again so I know they're a hit. I like to keep several multi-serve On-Cor entrée products in my freezer because life is demanding enough and dinner shouldn't be.  On-Cor does the prep work, saving me time, so I can take care of other to-do's that need to be done.  Also, the entrées have new packaging which makes it easier to understand exactly what I'm feeding my family and the entrées have no monosodium glutamate (MSG) added.

My menu called for Boneless Rib Sliders topped with coleslaw served on a slider bun.

Slider Buns

Coleslaw - I purchased the pre-cut coleslaw mix and readymade coleslaw dressing.

Prepare coleslaw early in the day and refrigerate.

When you're ready to start cleaning, place the On-Cor Entrée in the oven. I like to place aluminum foil underneath the entrée to catch any drips or spills and make clean up easier.

Gather Cleaning Supplies and Storage Containers:

Two Buckets

Microfiber Rags

Paper Towels

Two Spray bottles: one for vinegar and one for a vinegar solution (half vinegar-half water)

This is a good time to think small-term functionality and implement glass jars and catchalls for organizing anything that is usually left on the countertops.

How-To Kitchen Cleaning Hacks and Tips

Work from Top to Bottom - Ceiling to Floor

  1.  Start with your ceiling.  Place an old t-shirt over the bristles of a broom and gently sweep the ceiling paying attention to corners.  This is an easy way to get the dust bunnies off your ceiling.
  2. Clean light fixtures and replace bulbs if necessary. I like to take down my light fixtures and give them a good cleaning with a 50/50 vinegar-water solution.  Allow to dry thoroughly before putting back in place.
  3.   Remove curtains and draperies.  Launder or dry clean.  All of my curtains are machine washable.  I take them down, give them a good shake outside and then launder. I rehang them right from the washer but if they are a heavier fabric, dry as indicated on the care instructions.
  4. Wipe down curtain rods.  Dust and grime (from cooking) can adhere themselves to the rods and these should be washed as well before placing the freshened curtains back on the rod.
  5. Wash walls using the two-bucket method.
  6. Wipe down kitchen cabinets - doors and drawers including handles and hardware.
  7. Remove photos and papers and anything else on your refrigerator and wipe it down paying close attention to the handles - these are real grime catchers.
  8. Wipe down dishwasher and stove/oven.  Use a toothpick to remove built-up dirt from any recessed areas.  You'll be shocked at the gunk in this small crevices.
  9. Disinfect garbage can, inside and out and give your garbage can a good cleaning.
  10. Sweep or vacuum floors paying close attention to the corners.  Give them a good scrubbing as well if your flooring can handle it.

Dinner Time

Now that you're done cleaning it's time to prep dinner. This should only take 5 minutes, tops.

Remove the On-Cor Barbecue Sauce & 6 Boneless Rib Shaped Patties from the oven and cut each patty in half so that they will fit easily on your sliders.

Cut slider buns in half, if necessary, and top with a pattie and coleslaw and serve!

For your next family meal, head to the freezer aisle of Walmart or check out the store locator at www.on-cor.com to pick up one of On-Cor’s entrées.

Now, admire your clean kitchen and check another item off your to-do list.

  1. My favorite is the one that you reviewed. The only difference is that we put them on hoagie buns to make them more like the restaurant variety. I also save the leftover barbecue sauce to use on other things. That stuff is good enough to drink.

    1. Mary Beth says:

I agree that sauce is good!

  2. I like their chicken patties!
