How to Make a Philly Cheese Steak for a Crowd

Looking for an easy and delicious dinner idea? These Steakums Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches are perfect for satisfying your hunger and is one of my favorite Steakums recipes.

Using Steak-umm beef steaks which, if you're not familiar with them, are frozen thin steak slices (real steak) that are delicious and very easy to cook (directions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post) makes them time friendly and perfect for entertaining or a quick and easy meal for the whole family.

  • good quality block cheese - this is where you can be extra creative and choose whatever your favorite flavor is. There is no wrong choice. For this recipe I chose Extra Sharp Cheddar, Jalapeno Jack, and Colby Jack

Directions for how to cook Steam Ums - the simplest cooking step ever

Add frozen thin slices of steak (without paper) in a single layer to dry pan or skillet and cook over medium-high heat for approximately 60 seconds. Flip the steak and cook another 15 to 20 seconds until perfectly browned on both sides.

Remove cooked shaved steak pieces from frying pan with a pair of tongs and move on to the next step.

Preheat oven to 400° f.

Add butter to pan, melt over medium heat. Add the chopped bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms.

Season with a little salt and pepper if desired and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened.

Cut bread in half and spread bread with mayonnaise and place on rimmed baking sheet.

Slice cheese and layer on bread.

Add steak, sautéed mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Place more cheese on top of the onions.

Place in oven and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until cheese is melted.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Slice, serve and watch it disappear!

Hint: leave a useful hint here, like let the grill run for 4-5 minutes to burn off any remnants, then clean it. I like to use this bristle-free barbecue brush (affiliate link) for cleaning the grill.

  • A rib eye steak or flank steak can be used in place of frozen steak-umm.
  • Provolone cheese, swiss cheese, or American cheese can be used in place of the cheese varieties mentioned above.

In this blog post, we'll show you how to make a Philly cheesesteak for an easy dinner or to feed a crowd so get ready to enjoy one of America's most iconic sandwiches!

Ingredients

  • 15 ounces Steak-umms
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • ½ yellow onion chopped
  • 8 ounces package fresh mushrooms sliced
  • 1 loaf French Bread cut in half lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon Mayonnaise -enough to spread over the cut side of the bread
  • 8 ounces cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400° f.

How to Cook Steak Umms

  • Add frozen thin slices of steak umms (without paper) in a single layer to dry pan or skillet and cook over medium-high heat for approximately 60 seconds. Flip the steak using a pair of tongs and cook another 15 to 20 seconds until perfectly browned on both sides.

  • Remove cooked pieces of meat from frying pan and move on to the next step.

How to Make the Philly Cheesesteak

  • Preheat oven to 400° f.
  • Add butter to pan, melt, and then add the chopped bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms.
    4 tablespoons butter, 1 green bell pepper, ½ yellow onion, 8 ounces package fresh mushrooms
  • Season with a little salt and pepper if desired and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened.
  • Cut bread in half and spread bread with mayonnaise and place on rimmed baking sheet.
    1 loaf French Bread, 1 tablespoon Mayonnaise -enough to spread over the cut side of the bread
  • Slice and place cheese on bread.
    8 ounces cheese
  • Add steak, sautéed mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Place more cheese on top of the onions.
  • Place in oven and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until cheese is melted.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Slice, serve and watch it disappear!

Notes

  1. If using rib eye or flank steak instead of Steak-Umms, thinly slice the steak.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large cast iron skillet. When oil is hot sear the steak and stir until it's almost fully cooked.
