DIY Shabby Chic Fabric Shoelaces

I have a pair of pink tennis shoes that I have had for years.  I honestly don't remember when I got them.

I don't wear them every day.  As a matter of fact I forgot I even had them until the rack in my closet broke {again....3rd time ~ too many clothes perhaps?}.  I saw the sweet pink shoes amid a heap of clothes and pulled them out to wear them again.  The only problem...they seemed a bit bland to me.  I had seen some braided shoelaces at Martha Stewart and thought I would give it a try to spruce up these forgotten canvas cuties.

I knew just the fabric I wanted to use ~ a cupcake print I bought a few years back.  You only need a little bit of fabric for this and if you save your selvage edges, you could use those.  I cut a total of 6 strips of fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge ⅜" wide.  I used a rotary cutter to speed up the process.

Place three strips of the fabric together and duct tape it to a solid surface such as a table or counter top and start braiding.  Hold the strips taut but not too tight.  You want a nice firm braid but you don't want it so tight that the strips are too skinny and not noticeable.  {these pictures are terrible ~ I had my little guy ~ who can't sit still for nothin' ~ hold the braid while I took pictures....I hope you don't get dizzy looking at these}.  Once you have completed the braid end to end tie a nice tight knot at each end and lace-up your shoes.

I removed the oh so dull white shoelaces from the shoes to get them ready for their new look.....

and laced them up as usual.

And there you have it ~ a new look for some old tennies using just a little bit of fabric ~ form dull to Shabby Chic awesomness in minutes!

Here's a preview of something else I have in the works.....I'll be sharing it next week ~
