These homemade Pumpkin Spice Cream filled donuts taste amazing and they'll save you a trip to Dunkin' Donuts or your favorite donut shop!
There is nothing quite as satisfying as freshly made donuts.
The bounce of the dough...the light and airy texture....the aroma while they're frying....and the taste of freshness.
They are right alongside some of my family's other favorites like homemade pumpkin biscotti and pumpkin pie pull apart bread for holiday breakfasts and family brunches.
This particular recipe is a good old-fashioned one which means it will take a bit of time and some patience while you wait for the dough to rise but the results are so worth it.
Yeast is used for this recipe and will yield an awesome rise of the dough and a light and airy texture...exactly what you want in a donut.

Tips for Success
- Eggs - use eggs that are at room temperature for better results. Warm eggs easily by placing them in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.
- It’s a recipe that takes time to rise the dough and the ingredient quantities need to be followed to work. It’s important to let the dough rise twice as per recipe directions.
- Do not fill your frying pan with too much oil otherwise you will not get the line in the center.
- Coat the donuts in the sugar and pumpkin spice mix when they are still hot. The warm oil will help to make sure the sugar and spices stick.
Get Creative
- Drizzle melted dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate over the donuts.
- Add a sprinkling of nuts such as walnuts, macadamia nuts, or pecans over the freshly drizzled chocolate.
- Top with powdered sugar instead of the chocolate.
- Use a cupcake stencil to make a seasonal design on the donuts.
Recommended Equipment
- Large stand mixer with bowl and a dough hook like this one or a hand mixer (this is my favorite) with a dough hook.
- Heavy bottomed pan for frying like this one

- 5 tablespoon granulated sugar divided plus more for coating

- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 whole egg
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoon unsalted butter at room temperature
For Frying
Drizzle
- 1 cup dark chocolate
Pumpkin Cream Filling
- 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature
- 4 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
- ¾ cup canned pumpkin
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Instructions
Pumpkin Cream Filling
- Combine all ingredients for pumpkin cream filling in a bowl and mix until smooth.
- Refrigerate until ready to use.
Pumpkin Spice Donuts
- Heat the milk in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Add the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir gently to combine and let it rise for 5 minutes.
- To a large stand mixer bowl, (or a large bowl, if using a hand mixer with a dough hook), add 2 cups of flour, 4 tablespoons + 2 teaspoon sugar and salt. Stir to combine. Add eggs, yeast, milk, and vanilla. Knead over low speed for 2 minutes to combine.
- While mixing, add the butter slowly, 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of flour and more if needed. Knead until soft and smooth. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 5 more minutes.
- Add the dough to a greased bowl covered with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- With floured hands, remove the dough from the bowl gently and roll to ½ or ¾ inch thickness. Cut into rounds using a 3 ½ inch floured dough cutter.
- Reroll scraps as needed. Add rounds to a parchment paper tray and cover with a cloth. Let it rise in a warm area for 40 to 50 minutes more until doubled in size.
- When ready to fry, add 2-3 inches of oil to a heavy bottomed pan at medium heat. Fry donuts for 1-2 minutes each side until golden brown, turn and repeat.
- Transfer to a paper towel lined plate.
- Add ½ cup sugar and 2 tablespoons pumpkin spice, or more to taste, to a large bowl and mix. Add donuts and toss to coat. The sugar mix will stick better to the donuts when hot and some oil is still on it.
- Add the refrigerated pumpkin filling to a piping bag fitted with a ¼ inch round tip. Pierce each donut horizontally through the center and gently swirl to widen the hole. Squeeze piping bag to fill donut with pumpkin filling.
- Heat dark chocolate chips in microwave for 10 seconds at a time until it melts. Make sure to mix each time. Drizzle tops of donuts with dark chocolate. Enjoy!

Have an amazing day!!!
can your dough recipe be used for cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls or only doughnuts.Thank you
Hi Linda, I'm not really sure but that is a good question! I would think that because of the consistency, it would only work for doughnuts but if I try it for any other recipes, I'll let you know.
