Along with my Homemade Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Costume, I'm sharing 88+ more really awesome handmade costume ideas from talented bloggers everywhere!
I wanted to make something that was stress-free for my youngest son and the first thing that came to my mind was to make him a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup costume. I mean, who doesn't love candy and especially Reese's for Halloween?
My original plan was to use felt because it's inexpensive but once I went to the fabric store (Joann's in this case) I found that the blizzard fleece was on sale (50% off). I think the fleece was a better choice because it will move with Max while he's Trick or Treating ~ it's stretchy so if the weather here is cold I can layer clothes underneath without it being tight and I think it's definitely more able to withstand wear and tear if only for 1 night.
I grabbed a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Package from the register section at the front of the store and used that to match up the colors. I couldn't get exact matches but I was happy with the ones I found in stock. I ended up buying 1 yard of the orange ~ it was 60" wide so I knew that was more than enough for my son but if you're making this for a toddler you could buy less and if you are making it for an adult you may need up to 2 yards depending on their height. Widthwise you should be more than fine so you only need to take length into account.
🧵Supplies
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Package for reference
- Blizzard Fleece - 1-yard orange ¼ yard each yellow, dark brown, and peanut butter-colored beige
- A scrap of White Felt or the single pieces you can buy for under $1.00
- Thread
- Black paint
🧷Equipment
Once I was ready to start making his costume I fitted the fabric directly on him. Other than adjusting the width no other cuts were needed. I had excess on one side and marked it with a pin and made the cut.
Once the width was adjusted I used pins to mark the shoulder area, the opening I needed to allow his arms to come out and the area at the top for his head to go through. I left about 1.5 inches at the top to allow for the zig-zag cuts I was going to make to give it the look of a wrapper.
This is another view to give you an idea of the spacing for the arm.
I removed the fabric from my little model and got ready to sew.
I used a zig-zag stitch because of the stretch of the fabric to stitch the top of the fabric......
and added about a .5 inch area of stitching for the bottom of the armhole.
Once everything was stitch I used art paper (torn from a big roll from Ikea) to get an idea of spacing and lettering and then I used a Sharpie to write Reese's.
If you're really into things being exact you can take an empty wrapper to an office supply store or other such business and have them copy and enlarge the lettering to the size that will fit your costume and then use that as your template.
I wanted this to be as stress-free as possible so I just hand-lettered mine. Once it was done I cut out the letters and then traced them on my yellow fabric with a Sharpie, cut out the letters and used fabric glue to glue in place.
I also cut out freehand the peanut butter cup in the top right corner of the outfit added the filling and cut out the peanut butter cup for the bottom beneath the Reese's lettering. Glue all of those items and the calorie information onto your costume.
For the next step, I used black paint in a tube with a fine tip and yellow paint in a tube with a fine point to add the details. Don't worry about it being exact....just have fun!
Be as detailed as you want to be but if you are pressed for time leave out the little stuff!
I also outlined the yellow lettering and I was good to go! That's it....my stress-free Reese's Peanut Cup Halloween Costume. If you make one or something similar I would LOVE to see it!

What a fun costume. My son went as a Reese's cup many years ago!
Hey there, Mary Beth - this is so creative (and makes me want a Reeses!). 🙂
I just clicked on my link (#14) and it's routing to the Maleficent costume. Can you please update? Thanks!
Pinned and Tweeted this adorable costume!
Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday!
xoxo April

This is one of the cutest costumes I've ever seen! Of course, since Reese's are my must have Halloween candy I might be a little biased 🙂 My mom always made my halloween costumes so I love seeing when kids are lucky enough to have a fantastic costume to wear. Thanks so much for linking this up at our party today, Mary Beth!
How did You make the peanut butter cup?
Hi Alyssa ~ I used dark brown felt and just eyed up the wrapper and made a bigger cut (similar to a half moon) then when the size was what I wanted I used scissors to make a zig zag pattern on the edges using a smaller piece of light brown to simulate the peanut butter filling. I used craft paper first to draw and then cut out my shapes and put them onto the orange wrapper base and adjusted accordingly. The peanut butter cup to the left (underneath the word Reese's) is just a straight cut at the bottom, an outward cut on each side with a zig zag top.
Thank you! I need to add your party to my calendar so I don't miss it. I'll be by this week. 🙂
Awesome! How long did this take you?
It took me about one hour of actual hands-on time. 🙂
Good Evening,
Can you please tell me where you got the yellow and brown fabric from to make the words and Reeses Cups?
Thank you
Hi, Levone. I used Blizzard Fleece fabric that's available at Joann Fabrics. If you can't find it there, I have also seen it at Hobby Lobby. I hope that helps.
