ladyfinger being dipped into coffee mixture to make homemade eggless tiramisu

Quickly dip ladyfingers into the coffee mixture and allow excess to drain off. The draining off is an important step so that you don't end up with a soggy tiramisu.

📖 Frequently Asked Questions

What type of cake or cookies can be used in a classic tiramisu recipe?

An authentic tiramisu recipe is made with an Italian sponge cake called the Pan di Spagna or an Italian sponge cookie called Savoiardi biscuits which are also very similar to sponge fingers. In the United States we call these lady fingers or ladyfinger biscuits.

Since we're living in a bit of an odd time as of the writing of this blog I couldn't find several of the ingredients used in the traditional method and so opted for ingredients that were available at my local grocery store. One of the substitutions I made was to use Margherite cookies. I was very pleasantly surprised that there is very little taste difference between a traditional cake and this one which is a lighter version of the popular Italian dessert.

🍽 Equipment

🥡Storage

  • Make at least 2 hours in advance but I prefer to make it a day ahead of time.
  • Will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I like to slice any leftovers into a serving size and place in an airtight container.
  • If you'd like to freeze this follow all steps and wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil. This will keep for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

💭Top tip

  • Decaf Coffee - Since this will most likely be served after dinner I like to use my favorite coffee, Lion Decaf Gold Roast Coffee.
  • Quick Whip - When whipping the heavy cream use a cold bowl and beaters to get stiff peaks in no time. I do this by putting the bowl (I prefer a stainless steel option since it holds the cold longer) and beaters in the freezer for about 30 minutes before starting this recipe.
